I go in phases with my house. I had previously been simplifying both in my stuff and my design. Getting rid of any extra junk, sticking with bold, solid colors, and so on. I’m over that. It’s time to redecorate. I need to add some flare. Yet, I refuse to spend much cha-ching in the process, so I have to get creative.
My couch was longing for some pizazz. I’ve had a solid colored, teal, velvet pillow just staring at me for months telling me how naked she felt. I tried to soothe her a few times telling her she was beautiful just the way she was, but then I took matters into my own hands. Today she got a much-deserved makeover.
If you’re not on board with the gold-ify craze, you should be. A few pops of sparkly gold in a house really makes it shine (pun-I’m so funny). I combined my naked pillow and a design I had in mind and marched myself right into Michaels for some gold fabric spray paint. I’ve brushed on fabric paint, but this was a new process to me. I thought I’d give it a try (and Naked pillow agreed it was worth a shot since she was velvet and the texture would work better with a spray).
I taped 4 pieces of card stock together to make a stencil (I also made sure it was larger than the pillow square so I didn’t have to cover for overspray as well). I drew my heart design and then cut it out. The card stock was fairly heavy, but I did use a few curls of painters tape to hold it down tightly. Since I wasn’t familiar with this paint, I used a test piece of linen. It was stellar. I was convinced we would be best friends. Moved on to the pillowcase. The process went smoothly until the paint can died on me. I followed all the directions, cleaned out the nozzle…I must have had a dud. I marched into good ol’ Michaels and they replaced it with no questions asked. I was hesitant, but the second can performed better.
I let it dry for an hour, filled the pillowcase, and gave a big sigh of relief. Naked pillow wasn’t naked anymore. I successfully added color, texture, interest and also a little gold-ify to the room. Success.
Anyone have great results with another brand of fabric spray paint? I have a feeling I could get a little carried away with this process…curtains, tea towels, sweatshirts…the possibilities are endless!
