The Mom Club

When you become pregnant, you enter the mom club. It’s a pretty great club and I am thrilled to be a member! However, there are a few things you should know.

1. When you become a member of the mom club, all the ‘normal’ things in your life go out the window. Including your idea of conversation.

“Did you have a vaginal birth or a c-section?”

“My nipples are raw (from nursing of course).”

“I haven’t showered in three days.”

See, in my former life (pre-mom club)-I never would have imagined such things being said in such a frank and casual manor. Especially because these type of things are talked about among acquaintances (well, all are members of the club)!

Things that myself or my friends have talked about during our girls nights include – but are not limited to: our children’s sleep routines (which would make any non-mom fall asleep), eating habits of our children, pediatricians, any and all bodily functions and their regularity, Target and yoga pants. I mean, of course we have conversations about other things that don’t involve motherhood, but you get the idea!

2. You are tired all the time.

For real. So. Tired. Like, down to your bones-no-amount-of-coffee-will-help-tired.

3. Suddenly, things that used to matter don’t. And all kinds of things that didn’t matter do.

I heard a quote when my first was born that a mother must always think twice, once for herself and once for her child. This is SO TRUE isn’t it?!! I never knew I would care so much about TV show content, the washablity of markers, or spend hours reading reviews on child products.

I also care so much less about things now. For instance, how I look. Pre-mom club I wouldn’t have been caught dead leaving my house without makeup and unwashed hair.  I mean, I like to think I look good sometimes, but the reality is that I am often in yoga pants and a ponytail because I would rather spend the extra 35 minutes I would need to get ready (doing hair and makeup) with my child…or drinking another cup of coffee. (P.S. to all my friends who always look like supermodels, go ahead and share your secrets! I obviously need them!)

4. You forget a lot of stuff.

Maybe this is just me and my little group, but man. Organizational skills have taken a major hit. This is likely due to the lack of sleep. Also, it’s really hard to finish a thought when you have a little person tugging or yelling at you!

5. You are SO happy.

Motherhood is really unglamorous at times, but it is so worth it. I never understood how you could feel love so deeply that it hurts, until I held my daughter. I completely understand what it means to say my heart is full now. I am so excited to meet our next little one this spring so I can start all over again!
