To the Mom Who Hates Christmas

to the mom who hates christmas

To the mom who hates Christmas, and all through the house,

Are trees and decorations, just waiting to be put out.

The stockings are hung and the wreaths here and there,

All the while wondering, “When will December 26th get here?”

She secretly buys break and bake cookies and skips everything homemade

Then adds tons of sprinkles and calls it a day.

She runs out of tape when wrapping and ends up using glue,

Don’t be offended if the paper is blue.

Jingle Bells and Santa Claus are not really her thing

Who wants to sit on an old man’s lap anyway?

Tis the season for runny noses, coughing and colds

And throwing up on Christmas Eve was last year’s woe.

Stomach viruses everywhere know no holiday,

Making it through this Christmas will be what we pray.

Travel delays, pushing in stores, and spending money we shouldn’t,

When there are so many in need that would love a meal but couldn’t,

When did the focus turn from celebrating a Savior to celebrating self?

And I don’t even understand that whole Elf on a Shelf.

To the mom who hates Christmas, you are not alone.

Let’s avoid Pinterest together, leave your glitter at home.

For us, this year, we plan to rest and rejoice.

That another year has been so blessed and full, we will ignore the noise,

The voices that tell us we are doing it the wrong way,

That Christmas is happiness purchased as a day.

Spend time with your loved ones, keep life simple and sweet.

And if you are in my home, there are always special treats.

They may not be reindeer shaped, or served on a platter,

To the moms who hate Christmas, we know those things do not matter.

  1. Love your poem!! As you can see, it’s January and I’m a little behind on my blog reading. 🙂 I have struggled with Christmas and find myself somewhere in the middle with the tendency to waffle either way, depending on life’s circumstances and my attitude. I had to laugh wholeheartedly at your stomach bug reference because that was our lot this Christmas. Really missed our candle-light Christmas Eve service!! Happy New Year!
