Here in Kansas City, we are not without a wide variety of family-friendly activities to keep us on the move virtually all year long. (If your family is going a little stir-crazy after 3+ snow days, check out this post for some great indoor, kid-friendly KC hot spots. You’ll thank us for it!) But what do you do when you feel like you’ve seen it all?
Just a short drive west of town on I-70 (or K-10 out of Johnson County), the city of Lawrence has some entertaining options for all ages! Massachusetts Street, locally known as “Mass Street,” is home to some of the area’s best shopping, food, and entertainment for families. For a taste that’s uniquely Lawrence, check out Rudy’s Pizzeria – voted “Best of Lawrence” three years in a row! Their pizza menu boasts “everything from avocado to zucchini” so it’s safe to say that if you’ve dreamt of something on a pizza, Rudy’s has probably already tried it (and maybe even added it to their menu!). If sweet treats are more your style, then Sylas and Maddy’s Ice Cream should be a must-stop on any visit to Lawrence. (When you fall in love with their homemade ice cream, know that you can find that same flavor at the Sylas and Maddy’s location in Olathe as well as at Palmer’s Candies & Ice Cream, Miami Ice, and Sweet Caroline’s right here in the metro area!)
Kids young and old will enjoy The Toy Store which is so much more than just another toy store – it offers things like discovery stations, reading and craft areas, and train tables as well as craft classes and summer events for kids of all ages. If learning and nature are more your style, then you’ll want to check out one of Lawrence’s many parks, nature centers and museums (like South Park, conveniently located on Mass Street).
We’ve teamed up with the University of Kansas to help introduce you to another family-friendly option in Lawrence: Kansas Jayhawks Women’s Basketball. If you’ve always wanted to take your family to a high-energy (but still family-friendly) sporting event, there’s no better time – no better place – than the final month of the 2013-2014 season at the University of Kansas. As anyone who is familiar with Kansas athletics already knows, the atmosphere and tradition of Allen Fieldhouse is unlike any other – and with programs like Junior Jayhawks and special promotions throughout the year, the University of Kansas has plenty to offer for families like yours!
We’re excited to be giving away:
- four KU women’s basketball tickets to a game against Kansas State on February 26 or Iowa State on March 1
- one $50 gift card for downtown Lawrence which can be spent at many restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues
