Bump Diaries :: Month 3

Bump Diaries

Welcome to Bump Diaries – a pregnancy series on Houston Moms Blog! Becky is expecting, and here she will share her journey – the good AND the ugly – with all of you.  It is sort of like an homage to the original mommy blog where we provide a little peek into the life of a {pregnant} mom.

That wait from 8 weeks to 12 weeks is terrifying. To not know what will happen. To know the odds, especially as my doc so kindly reminded me, “at my age” {again, I’m 32 people}. Every day, whether you feel symptoms or not, you imagine the worst and hope for the best.

So it was SUCH a sweet relief to go at 12 weeks and see this sweet image…

I got to see and hear that sweet little heart beating away, and I got to hear the doc say, “All looks great.” And then my ever realist doctor {who I totally adore} followed that up with, “While you are never out of the woods in pregnancy ever, we can all take a deep breath now and relax, you are as out of the woods as you can be.”

So now we keep hoping and praying and treasuring each day. Not knowing for over a decade if I’d be able to have kids at all has trained me to soak up every moment. I don’t know what will happen with this little life. I desperately hope and pray for life to be sustained. But regardless, I fight each day to love and treasure this little one now.

So now we move on to the next waiting game – when do we find out the gender OR do we find out the gender?

Here’s the deal, I like the idea of being surprised, but just not the reality of it. Ha! I think it is so super fun when my friends do it, but I couldn’t do it. And, for the record, let me just add that it’s still very much a surprise at 20 weeks and the delivery still has lots of other fun surprises that never leave you feeling anti-climatic. Either way you go with this choice, you win. But we choose to find out.

Did y’all know that there is a blood test now? Yes, at 12 weeks you can take a blood test that actually tests the baby’s DNA and gives you a 100% accurate result on gender. I was all for it… until my doc told me it isn’t covered by insurance until 35 and costs $400 out of pocket. Aaaaand pass. So we should find out the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day!

For those trying to make guesses, prepare to be just as thrown off as I am…

Heart rate says girl. The heart rate is in the mid 160s, which indicates a girl again {I already have 2 — a 4 year old and 2 year old}. But, of course, about 100 boy moms have told me that their boy was high too. So all that goes to show that the ultrasound lady was right, about 50% of the time if the heart-rate is high, it’s a girl…and the other 50% of the time, it’s a boy. Wink.

Symptoms say boy {to me}. I was SO sick with both my girls. {Skip the rest of this paragraph to skip the details.} With my oldest girl, I didn’t really start getting sick until 10 weeks, but threw up almost daily for 20 weeks, then it all went away. With my 2 year old girl, I threw up just about daily from 6 – 30 weeks, then every few days until delivery. Miserable for my pregnancy, great for the (lack of) weight gain. Well this pregnancy I started throwing up about once a week at 9 weeks. Which totally makes me think boy. But I’ve also learned that brushing my teeth is my biggest trigger, so on days we stay home, I just don’t until right before the hubs comes home. I use a lot of listerine and keep a safe distance from others this pregnancy. Ha! I also got on nausea meds way faster this time.

The other biggest part of this month was embracing the belly. I’m just over 5 foot tall, this is my third kid, and I’m not a rail to begin with. So come week 8, I was being forced to embrace maternity clothes, but still opting for lots of flowy options. At about week 11, that just became not an option. I would get so frustrated every morning trying to get ready and hide this belly that cannot be hidden by something flowy anymore. So I decided it was time to embrace the belly. I even wore a fitted dress for our family pictures with Mommas Gonna SNAP!

So there you have it, month 3 is done. Other symptoms ::

  • Daily nausea {and weekly getting sick}
  • Exhaustion has lessened each week
  • Hyper sensitive and emotional/weepy {which is not me at all!}
  • Frank/blunt. Not sure if this is pregnancy or not, but I kinda lose my filter or ability to be P.C. when pregnant
  • Belly expanding
  • Felt, what I think was first flutter kicks at week 11 {…but could be gas, but don’t think so}
  • Thirsty all the time
  • Nothing sounds good. Except the moment it does. My poor hubs has been so deprived nutritionally because I’m too nauseous to cook or grocery shop, and don’t feel like eating all day. But come night, I’m ready and ready now and don’t want to do it. Ha!
  • Waking up a lot to go potty {could be because of all the thirst/water}
  • Short of breath. I don’t remember this happening so early last time, but I already feel so short of breath.

Becky K
Becky grew up in Houston, leaving only for college and an internship, but the humidity called her back! And it's a good thing - because shortly after moving home, she met her husband Chris, St. Louis Cardinals fanatic and {wife proclaimed} genius. She stays home with their two (soon-to-be three) girls: Karis, a girly girl and tenacious toddler, and Moriah, smiliest baby alive & Texas Women’s Hospital 10,000th baby in 2012. When she's not in the middle of a tea party, play dates, or potty training, she writes devotions with Sacred Holidays, teaches at prisons and women's ministry events and is a certified MBTI Life Coach {with Orbiting Normal}. She loves hot Houston summers, coffee creamer, dance parties with her family, nail polish, iced tea, reading {although it’s a lot of picture books these days}, and their church family {Bayou City Fellowship}! She would love to connect with you on her personal blog {www.beckykiser.com} or through Twitter {@beckykiser}, Pinterest {@beckyjkiser}, and Facebook.
