I Am a Fort Worth Mama: Mayor Betsy Price

1

betsy0316Please meet the most recognizable “Fort Worth Mama” featured so far: Fort Worth’s very own Mayor Betsy Price. Before she answered to titles of Ma’am and Mayor, this Cowtown gal went by Mama. From advice on motherhood to ways we can create a better community for our children, Mayor Price shares her heart–and humor–with us.

Mayor Price most enjoys cycling, walking, babysitting grandchildren, and visiting with every friend she sees. And she eagerly explains why, “I love people.” It’s the part of her office she most appreciates: “Public engagement is definitely a big part of how I reach out to those I serve as Mayor. I believe that feedback from people is absolutely essential to good government. We want to reach those who are busy making those life deicsions: where to settle, who to marry, what job to take, and remind them that they have an aveunue for civic involvement through SteerFW.”

As Mayor Price raised her children, education was an emphasis in her home. She encourages mothers to “dare to be a champion for your child. We want to build a community from residents and neighborhoods, to faith groups and local businesses that wholeheartedly support public education. Read, volunteer, and prioritize your child’s achievements.”

Okay. Now to the good stuff.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find?

If there’s nothing else in my purse, I always have lipstick . . . and a back up!

Why do you call Cowtown home?

Because it’s the best and only place to live! Fort Worth is the best big city with a small town feel. It’s safe with lots of education opportunities. From the Stockyards to the museums to the zoo to Sundance Square, there are lots of things for the kids to do.

What’s been the greatest joy of motherhood?

All of it! The challenges, the fun, the love, the family trips, sharing those memorable experiences–it’s worth every minute. Watching my children grow up and start their own families . . . I’m so proud of the adults my children have become. And, of course, I love being “Tootsie” for my grandbabies. It’s hard to name the greatest joy; I love all of it!

What’s been the greatest challenge of motherhood?

That’s such a tough question; there are so many more joys than challenges. For me, I think the greatest challenge has been balance. Finding that balance between knowing you’re responsible for shaping your child’s life while helping him or her to be independent. You have to learn to step back and watch them succeed and fail, and you can’t get stuck worrying or second-guessing your decisions. There’s also the balancing act you do with sharing your time between your work, community, and family.

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women?

I want other women to know that they can do whatever they want to. I hope to leave a legacy that encourages everyone to be invovled and engaged in their community and inspire others to be aware of making healthy lifesyle choices. And, of course, have fun with it!

pinkbluemamaFort Worth Favorites:
Date night: At home by the swimming pool with hubby and a glass of wine.
Dessert: I love taking my grandkids to get frozen custard–one of their favorite treats.
Entertainment: Anywhere! There are fun things to do everywhere, and I believe we have the most fun when we make our own entertainment.
Shopping (clothing for you): I’m actually not much of a shopper. I have very little time to devote to it, but I have a wonderful friend who keeps an eye out on the racks for me and keeps me wonderfully outfitted.
Relaxation: Riding my bike on the Trinity Trails.(Interesting tidbit: Mayor Price is known as much for her office as she is for her favorite pastime–cycling. She says, “I usually take the stairs at every opportunity, and I love riding my bike! It’s no surprise to me that people who are more active are also more engaged with their community and with their city. It’s so important that our city is a place that encourages well-being. From contrusting a wellness-friendly environment, to nutrition education in our communities, we’ve been blessed to develop initiatives like FitWorth and Blue Zones. Healthy cities are great for our citizens and our businesses.”)Let Mayor Price know you saw her on Fort Worth Moms Blog! Contact her through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
