A Bit about Chick-fil-A…

It all started in 1946 when Truett Cathy opened his first restaurant, Dwarf Grill, in Hapeville, Georgia. Credited with inventing Chick-fil-A’s boneless breast of chicken sandwich, Mr. Cathy founded Chick-fil-A, Inc. in the early 1960s and pioneered the establishment of restaurants in shopping malls with the opening of the first Chick-fil-A Restaurant at a mall in suburban Atlanta in 1967. Since then, Chick-fil-A has steadily grown to become the second largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States, with over 1,700 locations in 39 states and Washington, D.C. In 2012, annual sales were over $4.6 billion. Chick-fil-A is still privately held and family owned.

With 45 consecutive years of positive sales growth, Chick-fil-A has set itself apart by pioneering innovations and delicious products—including the ever-popular Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich.

  1. Ankeny Receiving Its First Chick-fil-A Opening Sept. 4 — Bringing Nearly 75 New Jobs;
    Chance for First 100 Adults to Win Free Chick-fil-A for a Year
    Children’s Book Drive Being Held at New Location with Donors Receiving Card for Free Sandwich

    ANKENY, Iowa (Sept. 4, 2014) – Metro Des Moines’ newest Chick-fil-A® restaurant will open Sept. 4 in Ankeny — bringing nearly 75 new jobs and the chance for 100 adults to win free Chick-fil-A meals for a year as the chain marks the 50th anniversary of its signature sandwich.
    After 10 years and more than $21.5 million in free food given away, Chick-fil-A’s “First 100” celebration continues to be the chain’s signature grand opening event, transforming the restaurant parking lot into a 24-hour community party as the crowd awaits the opening. First held in 2003 to celebrate Arizona’s first stand-alone Chick-fil-A, it was immediately implemented at every opening when the first person arrived more than 18 hours before the doors opened. For more than a decade, Chick-fil-A has provided security, entertainment and plenty of Chick-fil-A food to participants who come with TVs, computers, tents, couches and other survival gear to await grand opening morning.
    The new Ankeny restaurant at 2410 S.E. Delaware Ave. will host the next First 100 event that will award a total of $30,000 in free food. A digital offer card loaded with a one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A Meals will be given to each of the first 100 eligible adults, ages 18 and older with identification, in line when the doors open about 6 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4. If more than 100 people are onsite when the line officially opens at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, all 100 spots will be determined by a drawing held that morning with those selected needing to camp out for 24 hours to secure their spot. For complete rules, see Chick-fil-A First 100 Promotion.
    Chick-fil-A believes in partnering with individuals and organizations that work to enrich education, literacy and youth. In that spirit, Chick-fil-A Operator Thomas Krogman is collecting unused children’s books at the Ankeny restaurant from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Anyone who donates at least one new book will receive a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A entrée (one per person). Those camping out also will be engaged in the book drive with the top collector receiving an additional prize.
    Blank Children’s Hospital, which collects books to give to their young patients and their families to take home from their hospital stay, has been selected by Krogman to receive the nearly three-foot-high Book House. The new books collected during the grand opening celebration will be placed in the Book House as an early start to supporting the Children’s Hospital’s annual book drive starting in the fall through its December Festival of Trees & Lights event. The Book House, created from old and thrown out wood, is one of several community programs and opportunities being made possible through the generous support of the Chick-fil-A Foundation (www.chick-fil-afoundation.org).
    The opening of Ankeny’s first Chick-fil-A restaurant will create nearly 75 new jobs with Krogman still interviewing for strong candidates in an award-winning work environment that’s been recognized by dozens of industry awards. Most recently, the online job site Glassdoors.com took a survey of employees to find the top 25 companies to work for based on culture and values. They released their results with Chick-fil-A placing seven out of 25 and the only restaurant chain to make the list with employees sighting flexible hours, closed Sunday and employee scholarships as some of the reasons given
    The new 4,800-square-foot restaurant has indoor seating for 134 with additional 24 outdoor seats and features dual lanes with separate menu boards for customers to simultaneously place orders before merging into a single lane to pay for and pick up their food. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., serving a full breakfast menu until 10:30 a.m.
    The new Ankeny Chick-fil-A becomes metro Des Moines’ third location. Now with nine locations in the state, Iowa’s first Chick-fil-A opened 35 years ago in Cedar Rapids’ Westdale Mall in October 1979. The new Chick-fil-A on Delaware Avenue is one of 93 new restaurants the chain plans to open across the country in 2014, creating more than 7,400 new jobs.
    Perfecting a recipe his mother used in her Atlanta boarding house, Chick-fil-A Founder S. Truett Cathy, 93, first served his boneless breast-of-chicken sandwich, pressured cooked and served on a buttered bun with two crucial pickles, at his Dwarf Grill restaurant, which opened in 1946 in Hapeville, Ga. It was the signature menu item when the first Chick-fil-A restaurant opened in 1967 inside an Atlanta mall. Though joined by many other menu options over the years, the Chick-fil-A sandwich remains the centerpiece of the menu as the chain has grown to more than 1,838 restaurants in 40 states and Washington D.C.
    For Ankeny Chick-fil-A Operator Thomas Krogman his life wouldn’t be the same had he not applied for a job during high school at a quick service restaurant which he had never heard of – Chick-fill-A. At the time, it was all about him earning enough car and insurance money. Now nearly 20 years later, that one decision has led to his earning a Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship to attend Hillsborough Community College where he graduated in information systems in 1998, to meeting his wife at Chick-fil-A where they both worked to moving his family back to Iowa to run his first stand-alone Chick-fil-A restaurant four hours away from where he was born in Sibley, Iowa. He is transferring from Tampa’s University Mall location, where he became the Operator in December 2012.
    “Personalized customer service and freshly hand-crafted food have been the hallmarks of Chick-fil-A since the day Truett opened his first restaurant,” said Krogman. “My team members and I are committed to those same ideals as we welcome our guests and first timers to our new Ankeny restaurant and provide them with a remarkable experience.”
