Not all backpacks are created equal. (Really? you ask yourself as you spy the flimsy backpacks lining your mudroom wall.)

Backpack shopping is a fun milestone as families get ready for back-to-school. It’s fun to shop for cutesy packs with swirls of pink and purple. Glittery packs. Dinosaur packs with squishy spines. But, don’t let the fun designs overshadow the safety of those packs.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Tammy Watkins with The Livewell Clinic on our DMMB team, so we asked her for some help in finding a quality backpack.

Dr. Tammy states, “When looking for a backpack for your student to use at school and to carry items back and forth, keep the following tips in mind to ensure proper spinal health.”

  • Two padded straps (minimum 2” wide)
  • Lightweight
  • 2-3 compartments for equal weight distribution
  • Slightly padded back
  • Waist strap and chest strap
  • Back pack should be no larger than the child’s back
    • Maximum height: shoulder line (where bag will rest) to waist line (belly button) and add 2 inches
    • Maximum width: keep centered between the ridges of the shoulder blades (1-2 inches here is OK)
