You like ABBA, right? I mean, who doesn’t like ABBA? The music is infectious and super fun to sing and dance to! But when I was given the chance to see Mamma Mia the musical on opening night I was excited but also a little nervous. Here’s why: I tried to watch the movie version and I barely lasted 20 minutes.  I was worried that the musical version would be just as bad but I figured I’d round up a few girlfriends and we’d at least get out of the house alone for a few hours and if it was terrible we could laugh about it later.

You guys. It most definitely was NOT terrible. In fact, it was pretty GREAT. I’ve seen a few musicals but they’re not really my thing. This musical? I loved it.  I would even see it again. The music was great (if you hate ABBA you may not like it…but back to my second sentence, who doesn’t like ABBA?!), the costumes for the Dynamos were hilarious, and it was really funny! I wasn’t expecting it to be as funny as it was but we were laughing consistently through the first act.  The second act was a bit more serious but still had great moments, as well as two back-to-back songs sung by Georgia Kate Haege who plays Donna (the mom). Let me tell you, that Georgia Kate can SING. She was so good!

I would definitely recommend this as the perfect Girls Night Out. We had a lot of fun and all of us thought it was really good. I will warn you, the two girls in our group who had seen it before said it was quite a bit more risque than the last time they had seen it (5 and 7 years ago). There is a content warning for the musical that says it contains some adult humor and situations and that it’s best for ages 11 and up, but honestly I’d be uncomfortable seeing it with an 11-year-old.

One last tip, there were some people who ducked out quickly at the end of the show while the cast was taking their bows (presumably to avoid traffic in the parking lot) but they missed out on one of the best parts of the show. After the bows the cast does a few of the best songs in a kind of mini Abba concert. So worth it.

Mamma Mia will be showing at The Music Hall at Fair Park from June 3-15.  You can buy tickets here.

  1. I am so upset that I won’t get a chance to see Mamma Mia! I was very excited that it was here in Dallas, but we decided to move at this time!

  2. Loved the movie, and the theatre has always been a great love of mine. Perfect combo! I haven’t seen a musical in 20 years! I’m way overdue.
