What a fun morning at The Little Yoga House yesterday! “Ring Around the Lotus”, butterfly stretches and the tick tock side bends made for a great way to start the day!

The Little Yoga House

I’ll be the first to admit I was a bit skeptical about yoga for little kids. I wondered, “How in the world are the instructors going to get babies, tots, and pre-k kiddos to do yoga?” Well, I knew immediately upon entering the studio at The Little Yoga House that I was in the presence of the kid yoga pros! The Little Yoga House has an adorable gated park at the street entrance and a bright blue tire swing. If you know anything about kids then you know that the outward appearance of a place has to be kid-friendly in order to get them out of the car willingly and this place has got that covered.

Once inside the studio you’re immediately surrounded by sounds of laughter and kiddy giggles. I even heard a 4 year old scream, “Yoga!” at the top of his little lungs as he ran across the studio floor. Ah, music to an Austinite’s ears! The instructors signaled the beginning of class by closing a long, red velvet drape that separated the large room. It worked like magic to grab the kid’s attention. Class began with a butterfly puppet that liked to fly, stretch, bend, and of course sit, in the butterfly pose. The instructor not only sang with the puppet to keep the kid’s attention, but she modeled enthusiasm about the yoga movements to keep the kiddos engaged.

Now, I read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? to my kindergarten class for years, but I never knew it could be used for yoga! The kids loved doing downward dog, cow pose, and cat pose alongside the instructor while reading this familiar book. This was such a cute approach.

The songs, the books, and the breathing ball already had me sold, but then they finished up with a relaxing foot massage scented like yummy strawberries or chocolate while the kids rested with a “relaxation buddy”. Of course, they needed to play with all the fun toys while the moms got their goodie filled swag bags and helped us pass out the Fave juice and Peeps minis.
