Well… the new school year is about to start in a few weeks, with that, extracurricular activities will be commencing too. Whether it’s soccer, dance, out at the park, or just running around at home, you want to capture your kids in action… you’re a mom! Sometimes the photos of your kids may be a bit blurry or slightly out of focus. In the photography world, we call that “momateur photography”.

Today, we want to share a simple 5 Step Guide to help you remedy you picture taking skills and get more photos in focus. This guide will work with DSLR cameras, point & shoot cameras, camera phones or a tablet camera.

5 Step Guide for Momateur Photographers

Step 1:

Find something you can brace yourself against, a wall, a car, a tree or lie on the ground. Any solid structure.

Step 2:

This may seem like a no-brainer considering step 1, but lean against the wall or put your elbows onto to a solid surface, then brace yourself. This will keep you from having camera blur from your movement when you press the shutter or the button used to take your photos.

Step 2a:

If you have a tripod for your camera use it… this is always better than having to rely on steps 1 or 2.

Step 3 (DSLR only):

Look through your view finder and check your shutter speed. To stop action your shutter speed must be set at 1/500 of a second or faster, if not you won’t stop motion.

Step 4:

Focus on your subject or the spot your subject is moving toward. Then press the button to take your photo. (Side note: make sure there is not a lot of clutter in the background that will distract the attention away from what is important)

Step 5:

Don’t stop to look at the photo you just took, instead hold down the shutter or button to capture several photos in succession. This will ensure at a minimum that one frame will be sharp or sharp enough.

Believe it or not, it is just that simple. Yes, it will take practice, but if you use these simple steps more of your photos will be in focus.
