Between the cooking, the cleaning and getting everyone to their meetings and practices, it’s hard to enjoy yourself. Sometimes, it’s time to throw in the towel and plan a staycation.
If you live in or near Austin or plan to travel here on business or on vacation, you have picked the right place. Whether you’re planning a staycation or a vacation in Austin, here are some of the fun things to consider:
The Food
We are known for our great chefs, funky collaborations and food trucks. Try something new and splurge like you would on a vacation. Searsucker is a newer restaurant in town started by Top Chef Brian Malarkey and oh man, is it good. Feast on pork belly, fried bacon sundaes and more worth-the-calories food.
Want something more laid back but still delicious? Try Josephine House in Clarksville. You get to drive around one of the cutest neighborhoods in town and then eat at one of the cutest spots!
The Water and Land Attractions
While we are not known for our water, the locals see it as a viable part of our city. Lake Austin has the coldest and most refreshing water and the waterfront itself is beautiful. You can also rent a boat on Lake Travis and sail away for a few hours just like you would on a vacation to the beach.
Pack up those bikes, roller blades or just your sneakers and head to one of the many trails in and around Austin. You can venture to Enchanted Rock or just down the road at Lady Bird Lake!
Music
The music here is, for the most part, very family-friendly. Most parks have free outdoor concerts like Blues on the Green, and feature vast open spaces, playgrounds or fountains for the kids to run around.
Or try a local brewery outside of Austin like Jester King that has music, pizza and a whole farm for the kids to play. Pack a cooler with treats for you and the kids and you are set!
Hotels
Are you wanting to get away but not very far? You’ve got options. Tons of beautiful options. My favorite resort is the Lost Pines Resort just outside of Austin. Lazy rivers, late night s’mores and horse rides make this place an all-around family resort.
If you truly want to splurge, try the Lake Austin Resort or Travaasa Spa. Be a celebrity for the weekend with massages, champagne and more!
Time to start planning your staycation!
