and support Breast Cancer Awareness month! I’m sure you have heard that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and it is the second leading cause of death among women. Scary stuff.

Have you or someone close to you been diagnosed? My grandma is a survivor and I just recently found out that a friend has it. It really makes you stop and think about a lot of things. Early detection is so important. Do you do monthly breast exams? I will be honest and say that I do not do them, but I know I should. Do you get mammograms regularly? You are supposed to start having mammograms at age 40 and have them done every 1-2 years. I am just a pinch over 30 so I haven’t had that experience yet. There are certain things that we as women can do to increase and decrease our chances according to this website…

Increased chances:

  • just being a woman
  • age…chances increase after 55
  • family history & genetics
  • being unhealthy and/or over-weight
  • smoking

Decreased chances:

  • full term healthy pregnancies before the age of 30
  • breastfeeding, especially if done over 12 months!
  • maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle
  • avoiding many toxic chemicals

So in other words, put the cookie down and slap on your running shoes {pink ones of course} and get some exercise, do your monthly exams, and apparently make babies…then feed them! 😉 Seriously though, be aware and up to date on the info…be #’s 2-8…not 1.

There are a lot of things happening locally to support Breast Cancer Awareness month that you may not be aware of:

  • 2012 Komen Austin Race for the Cure is Sunday, November 4 in downtown Austin at 7pm
  • Kendra Scott is donating 20% of proceeds on certain pink jewelry pieces…get to shopping!
  • Stiletto Stampede is Saturday, October 20 @ 10am at The Triangle Park
  • Austin JC Penny’s is offering free haircuts to Breast Cancer Survivors
  • AWAY Spa at the W Austin is offering “Pink Manis and Pedis” benefiting Stiletto Stampede during the month of October
  • Sullivan’s has a “Pink Menu” to support BCA during October and donates for each menu sold
  • just because I thought it was so sweet…I have seen quite a few baseball and football teams full of boys wearing pink socks this month! Good job boys! 🙂

These are just a few of the things I found, I am sure there is so much more. Get all gussied up with your girlfriends, slap on those stilettos, get to racing, grab a bite to eat, and get your nails done all in the name of supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month. Support the cause, raise money, celebrate the survivors, and honor those that fought with all they had!
